RMA Cleanup Projects

 

 

  • Basin A Consolidation Area
    • Received lower-level contaminated waste from Arsenal cleanup projects
    • Holds 2.6 million cubic yards of material
    • Protective cover placed over area and seeded with native vegetation
Start date: 1997
Completion date: 2011; long-term operation and maintenance of cover ongoing.

 

 

  • Basin F Exterior 

    • Excavated 261,803 banked cubic yards of contaminated soil from adjacent Basin F project site
    • Soil taken to Hazardous Waste Landfill and Basin A
    • Protective cover placed over Basin F Exterior and seeded with native vegetation

  • Basin F Wastepile 

    • Odorous contaminated soils and sludges from a former holding pond were excavated and taken to the Enhanced Landfill
    • Proven odor control methods were used to prevent nuisance effects for the surroundings communities, and work was conducted only during weather conditions that were favorable to controlling odors
    • The excavation area was backfilled with clean soil and seeded with native vegetation
    • A protective cover was built over the landfill that included a layer of clay, soil and crushed concrete to prevent wildlife from burrowing into the area

    Start date: 2006
    Completion date: 2007; long-term operation and maintenance for the cover over the former excavation area and the landfill are ongoing

  • Bedrock Ridge Groundwater Plume Extraction System 

    • System installed to capture contaminated groundwater plume from Army Trenches and Basin A
    • Groundwater piped to Basin A Neck groundwater treatment facility
    • Long-term operation

    Start date: 1999
    Completion date: System installation completed in 2008; groundwater treatment and long-term operation and maintenance are ongoing.

  • Burial Trenches Remediation 

    • Trenches primarily used for disposal of munitions and other debris
    • Removed 101,998 banked cubic yards of soil and debris from disposal trenches
    • Munitions debris and related soil were taken to the Hazardous Waste Landfill and Basin A consolidation area
    • The trenches were backfilled with clean soil and seeded with native vegetation
